SHAHDARA JHEEL PARK, Shahdara, Delhi

A lake-revitalization project to revive the now dried-up Shahdara Jheel - aims at using treated sewage water to ensure that the lake remains full despite all its natural watershed having been destroyed due to the surrounding urban development of road infrastructure etc. Specialized phytorid treatment techniques being proposed by NEERI shall help clean sewage water flowing near the site into useable clean water, which the landscape demonstration facility shall further provide tertiary treatment to before the same is allowed to be used in the lake. This water shall ensure that the lake water lost due to evaporation and percolation is made up with help of the treated water. The rest of the treated water shall be used for landscape irrigation to create a series of buffer gardens which during monsoons shall help filter the stormwater and fill up the lake.
The contextual analysis of the site, location of the metro station near the dense habitation also impacted the design to create a direct access for people in addition to a special over-spill area to cater specifically to the needs for the people residing in the vicinity. Open play areas for kids, smaller gardens for elderly etc. have been incorporated in the plan to make this a popular destination, while showcasing ecological restoration processes.
