BKS MARG, New Delhi

The streetscape design for BKS Marg–a busy arterial in the NDMC area aimed as integrating the immediate context and creates urban “experiences” around these popular destinations. Emerging from the busy Connaught place commercial & biggest metro station, the streetscape along BKS Marg connected important destinations like the Hanuman Mandir, Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, the Church, the State emporia and the R.M.C. Hospital. All these public destinations were integrated in the street design with the side walks transforming into large scale pedestrians plazas integrating & celebrating the different adjacent land uses. The design of the BKS Marg apart from incorporating safe junctions, continuous pedestrian & cycling tracks was the first project of its kind in Delhi.
To set the standards for sidewalk pavements to be maintained at same level and having all the small vehicular entries to different road side properties – go up & down a ramp to negotiate the level differences. This was for the first time in Delhi that the design prioritized the pedestrian– a detail which then was replicated all over the NDMC area.
