ECO-RESTORATION OF 8 LAKES, Coimbatore:
The lakes in Coimbatore which are important component of its cultural & natural heritage suffer in a state of neglect and disrepair today. These lakes instead of carrying sewage and being dumped with debris can become the city’s now ‘public realm’ and be harnessed for eco system services to help the city become more sustainable and livable in the future.
The lake system built by the Cholas in 1200 AD after a unique ‘system-approach’. The Coimbatore Smart City Plan list out 8 lakes situated North of Noyyal River valley, which are fed by canals from overflow weirs constructed on River Noyyal and also storm-water streams which originate in the Western Ghats situated further north of the Noyyal basin. Making connections by identifying and working on the “MISSING LINKS” the 8 lakes project for Coimbatore Smart city focuses on 3 areas
I. Water linkages
II. Green linkages
III. Walking and cycling linkages
By undertaking a ‘SYSTEMS APPROACH’ the project aims to create a multi- disciplinary and inter- departmental cooperation to create a UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY for the city to re- align itself and its urban evaluation to protect, conserve and celebrate is rich CULTURAL HERITAGE and help tackle problems of sewage pollution by making it an opportunity to re- define the city’s cultural connection with water.
SMART, HEALTHY, ACTIVE, ECOLOGICAL INCLUSIVE PUBLIC SPACES IS WHAT THE COIMBATORE SMART CITY PROMISES WITH THE 8 LAKES & 30KM NMT PROJECT.
